txt a Monster 2 win! Another one from the archives

I still rate this campaign for its creative use of voice and SMS, especially as it is from 2002. At the time, it was only 12Snap who were running campaigns that combined IVR (Interactive Voice Response) with SMS (text messaging) from what I can remember.

It seems pertinent to share this one with you now as the new Monsters University film is out this summer – 11 years on from the original.

The mechanic of this campaign was pretty simply. You bought a packet of fries from McDonald’s. You opened the door to reveal a special phone number and code. Text the code message to the phone number given. You get a text message to say if you’ve won or lost. If you won, one of the Monsters called you back and screamed at you (which is in keeping with the original film).

This was the biggest mobile marketing campaign ever at that time and was printed on 13 million fry boxes. There was a tiered prize structure with all players being advised whether they had won or lost by text message. Premium winners also receive a “monster MobileCard” (this was using IVR – interactive voice response – and was the monster screaming at you). Intermediate prize winners get a mobile ringtone or logo (those were the days when you could offer these as a genuine prize to customers!). Non-prize-winners got a text message from a monster asking them to play again.

It was run via T-Mobile’s servers and they struggled under the volumes of messages coming through due to the popularity and large-scale of the sales promotion. At the time, McDonald’s was one of the brands pioneering mobile marketing.

The Implications of the New Gambling Act - seminar 25th July

NOC and 160 Characters have joined forces to put on an event to discuss the implications of the new Gambling Act. This has implications for the way quizzes and competitions are devised and managed on television, but it also has implications for sales promotion quizzes and competitions too and how those are handled. NOC has brought together a variety of speakers (and delegates) to discuss the impact on the service providers in this sector and to assess the future landscape of this currently lucrative industry sector after the Gambling Act comes into force in September 2007. There are new compliance and regulatory rules to consider and if you are active, or considering being active in this sector, then this seminar is probably well worth a look.

The seminar is being held at 3pm on 25th July and costs £50 for members of 160 Characters or NOC and £80 for non-members. More information on their website.

The topics and speakers include:
"Bringing the GA to Life - The latest views and decisions of the Gambling Commission"
Tom Kavanagh, Deputy Chief Executive,
Gambling Commission
"The new regulatory framework for PRS in broadcast"
Paul Whiteing, Director of Policy & Innovation, ICSTIS
"What does the new GA mean for the Interactive Media Industry? - A checklist of actions to consider"

Brinsley Dresden, Head of Media, Brands &
Technology, Lewis Silkin
"Defining the roles and responsibilities of service providers and their customers within a clear regulatory framework"
Scott Davies, Director, Million-2-1

"Vote for independence - the importance of getting that external assistance for all promotional activities"
Jeremy Stern, Managing Director, PromoVeritas

Samsung and Die Hard 4.0 team up for mobile action

I don't have a Samsung phone these days so I've no idea what the substance of the content is here as I have a Nokia (Dear Mr Samsung, please feel free to send me a lovely shiny new Samsung phone if you feel so inclined...), but the joint campaign for Samsung and Die Hard 4.0 looks pretty good and works in three parts...

1. Get free Die Hard 4.0 related content for your phone (text in DH to 62945 to get the link - but only if you have a Samsung phone - don't bother if you don't have a Samsung phone as they won't let you in to the wapsite).

2. Buy the official Die Hard mobile game
3. Enter the Die Hard Quiz for a chance to win blockbusting prizes

As it's all Samsung phone specific, I can't test it for you. And you'd have to be the die-hardest Die Hard fan to upgrade your phone to a Samsung on the back of this campaign. But for customer retention, I think it works. And there's nothing wrong with a bit of customer retention. There should be more of it!

If there are any readers out there who've tried out this campaign or have more information about it, then please do let us know if the content was any good and if it worked for you.

Tuesday linkage

Mobile gaming and LBS
Have you played The Journey II yet? It's a mobile game - designed for Symbian phones (so that'll be Nokia Series 60 phones then).
"The Journey II" interweaves your real environment with the setting of a thrilling detective story. To solve the mysterious case, you have to go outside and walk around, literally. This concept makes "The Journey II" the world's first location based mobile adventure game!"
If you have tried it, do let me know how it worked. [Via Tom Hume]

Text to Win Sales Promotion
Coca Cola Company's new text to win a Wii campaign goes live on 14th May until the beginning of July 2007. Running on 182m cans and bottles of Fanta, Sprite and Dr Pepper, you have a chance to win 10 'ultimate Wii Games Rooms' which consists of a Nintendo Wii Console, Wii Sports game, Samsunb 26" LCD TV, a mini fridge and a case each of 330ml Fanta, Sprite and Dr Pepper. The campaign is heftily supported by above the line advertising and extensive PR as well as the Get Up and Play website. You enter by texting in the unique code on the underside of the ring pull or on the back of the bottle label.

I wonder what the chances are of you actually winning anything bearing in mind the promotion is printed on 182m cans of drink...? I'll give it a go when it goes live and see what the interaction is like. Wouldn't mind winning one of those Wii Games Rooms myself!

Has the bluetooth permission marketing conundrum been solved?
TeriMobile claims to have sorted out the permission aspect of bluetooth marketing. They've offered me a trial of the service and I haven't had time to take them up on the offer yet, but if anyone else has, or has a comment about the service, please do let me know via email or by leaving a comment her on the blog.

Movers and shakers
Angel Gambino (ex MTV) and Laurence Pichot (ex Orange) have both joined Bebo recently - Angel will be driving their music strategy and Laurence will be looking after marketing and partnerships. And Hugh Griffiths (ex O2) joins Microsoft (seems to me to be the 'live' division which covers off MSN Messenger amongst other things). Seems with Microsoft's recent acquisition of mobile advertising firm ScreenTonic and Hugh's appointment, they are, at long last, taking mobile seriously.
