The EMMAs are open for entry

emmas logoI’m always pleased to support Mobile Marketing Magazine Editor, David Murphy, in his ventures and this one is a particular favourite of mine. It’s the annual Effective Mobile Marketing Awards (or EMMAs as they’re affectionately known) sponsored by Upstream. It’s the second year and I’m most honoured to be a judge again.

Why do I like these awards?

  • Well, they reward campaigns and initiatives that have actually worked, have met campaign goals and delivered a return on investment (if indeed that was the goal). And we can all learn from that so it ends up being a great repository of case studies
  • They’re free to enter. Yes, that’s right, FREE to enter
  • There’s a great range of categories to enter – whether you’re into apps, advertising or mCommerce, there’ll be a category for you to enter if mobile is your thing
  • The winners get lovely PR coverage in the magazine – both online and in print
  • The awards bash will be a treat if last year’s is anything to go by.

There are 17 categories, including several new ones, and entry is free. We also welcome multiple entries from the same company. The Awards will culminate in an Awards Ceremony at Delfina in London, on 3 November, 2011. The categories are below, and the deadline for entries is 5pm UK time, Friday, 26 August, 2011. So that’s a month to go, folks.

Swedish Beers is back and it’s going back to its roots on Wednesday 27 July 2011

comeback logoYep, that’s right, Swedish Beers is back in London after a short break and we’re going back to our roots at The Nordic Bar where it all began almost 10 years ago.

It’s the same formula as before – mingle, make friends, talk of mobiles, marketing, life in general, drink beer, talk some more, rinse and repeat. There’s no PowerPoint, no formal speeches, and no agenda. Just come with a smile on your face and be prepared to hang out with everyone from mobilists to marketers, brands, agencies, creatives, media owners, journalists, pundits and more. We hope there’ll be a good mix of friendly faces for you to chew the fat with.

We will have free house beer, house wine and soft drinks for you courtesy of our lovely sponsors Millennial Media and Eagle Eye Solutions. You’ll have to look for them to get your free beer tokens. There are plenty to go around. If we run out of beer tokens, then we’ll revert to a pay bar.

What: Swedish Beers Mobile Networking Party – The London Comeback Edition

When: Wednesday 27 July 2011 from 6.15pm until 11pm

Where: You'll find us at the Nordic Bar on Newman Street which is the North side of Oxford Street, nearest tube Tottenham Court Road, Oxford Circus or Goodge Street. We’ll be in the back bar but fully expect to take over the front bar too.

There’s no need to RSVP, just turn up. If you’re really feeling the need to RSVP somewhere, then you can do that over here http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=133200136763763&ref=mf

NN4D–NAVTEQ Developer Day–London 8 June

In my capacity as co-organiser of navteq logoMobile Monday London , I thought it might be worth telling you about an event we’re supporting. It’s NN4D with their upcoming developer day on 8 June in London. It’s free to attend, but registration is required: http://www.nn4d.com/site/global/market/developerday/p_devday.jsp/. This is a unique opportunity and the first time the NN4D team have brought developer days to Europe. They’ve just had a great developer day with Mobile Monday Tel Aviv so let’s make sure this is a great one too.

The reason why I think you might be interested is because there are genuine business opportunities by working with NAVTEQ and the people who make the decisions will be there on Wednesday. If location (and we’re not just talking mapping here) is part of what you do, then these are the people to talk to with their enormous channel partner network, access to the right people at the right time and help with the technical details, marketing, distribution and more, this is a good opportunity to make friends and make a difference to your business. That’s why I’m going. Oh, and there will be plenty of technical sessions too if that’s what you’re after.

Why come?

  • Learn directly from NAVTEQ and our partners Nokia, Samsung, Orange, Blue Via, deCarta and more about their map data and partner APIs to quickly apply your skills to create the most compelling location-based mobile apps
  • Listen to developers share their lessons learned
  • Explore augmented reality and next-generation technologies for location-based 3D apps and games
  • Learn about free technical support, free marketing support and free business development opportunities to meet global channel partners (this is the most interesting bit for me – the opportunities are very real and are there for the asking and can make a real difference to your business)
  • Network with peers, meet experts and discover how to get your app in front of potential customers and industry influencers
  • Participate in a Lucky Draw to win an iPad and other prizes and giveaways

Learn about the latest developments and innovation in location through case studies, interactive panel discussions and unique networking opportunities. Meet the people who matter both on the business side and the technical side. They will be out in force to help you.

Find out what the global opportunity is for location-based applications and how NAVTEQ data can help you differentiate your applications. Discover how the NAVTEQ Network for Developers (NN4D) can assist you every step of the way, from building your app straight through to business development and marketing and help you meet global channel partners. And all this is offered free. They will never ask for a penny from you in fees or in revenue share. Ever.

The technical portions of the day focus on APIs and SDKs that enable both mainstream location-based apps and services, and next-generation technologies for location-based 3D apps and games.Learn how to get started creating location enabled mobile apps from partners, such as Nokia, Samsung and deCarta who will introduce you to their APIs.

The day is suitable for both business people making decisions about mobile apps and services and how they can be distributed and marketed and also developers and coders who need to know more about the nitty gritty of the technical detail.  The full agenda is here: http://www.nn4d.com/site/global/market/developerday/agenda2/p_agenda2.jsp

Where is it?

Dexter House, 2 Royal Mint Court, Tower Hill, London EC3N 4QN  – nearest tube is Tower Hill map.

The event is co-located with Mobile Apps World and there are discounts available to attend that if you wish.

When is it?

Wednesday 8 June 2011 – registration opens at 8.30am and the day will finish around 5.30pm.

RSVP

The NAVTEQ® Developer Day is free of charge but you must pre-register. Please RSVP here:  http://www.nn4d.com/site/global/market/developerday/p_devday.jsp

See you there next week!

Links ‘n stuff for a sunny Wednesday afternoon in May

Some stuff I’ve thought noteworthy in the last few days and weeks for your delectation.

Bitcoin: most dangerous open-source project ever created..unstoppable..will change the world unless governments ban them. Well worth a read for the implications. Talk about disruptive…

~

The BBC College of Journalism recently ran, what looked to be, a very interesting event called the Social Media Summit. Lots of good tweeting came out of it, including this great quote:

"Most organizations confuse Technology with Innovation. One is shiny things, the other is taking risks"

so you may be interested to take a look at some of the videos and reports of the day and you don’t need to be a budding journalist to get something out of them either!

Quote of the Day: Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of someone else ~ Judy Garland via @QuotesPedia

A truly inspirational tale for anyone going through any life-crisis, mid- or otherwise. http://www.problogger.net/archives/2011/05/18/how-to-quit-your-job-move-to-paradise-and-get-paid-to-change-the-world/ Hat tip to @J1M0T. More to come…

Lots of mobile stuff going on… here are a few

Mobile Monday London is going great guns. We have three events lined up in the next few weeks – yes three! On 6 June we’ve organised a debate to get to the bottom of the HTML vs. Apps argument sponsored by the lovely folks at BlackBerry. On 20 June, we’re talking about geolocation in association with UCL and their upcoming iphone dev training programme and on 4 July we’ll be talking about the developer ecosystem and sharing new insights from Vision Mobile and BlueVia. Keep up to date with Mobile Monday London on email (we have a useful discussion group), facebook, linkedin and twitter and keep an eye on our event site http://momolo.org for registration details.

And there’s more…

bln logoThe BLN Money in Mobile Awards are open for entries until noon on 31 May. This a great opportunity for *any* mobile company – not just a start-up – to get some exposure to new clients, VCs and journalists. This award forms part of the Money in Mobile conference from the nice folks at The BLN (Business Leader’s Network) and the 10 companies chosen will present on the day. It’s free to enter and they’re just after a 100 word entry from you here. You have nothing to lose by entering and everything to gain. So go for it! Oh, and if you’d like to attend the conference as well, there is a rather decent Mobile Monday London discount on offer…details here.

logo_site1And for mobile start-ups specifically, the annual Vodafone Mobile Clicks competition is up and running again and Mobile Monday London is helping Vodafone run the UK element of the event. We’re after the best mobile start-up in the UK to put forward to the final in Amsterdam in September where you’ll be up against competitors from Turkey, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Holland and Germany. The prize fund is Euro 225,000. There are no strings attached to the prize either – you don’t have to do a deal with Vodafone and no-one is after a % of your business. Again, it’s free to enter so get those thinking caps on and get those entries in. Closing date, midnight CET 12 June. More details on the MoMoLo blog.

Keep your eyes peeled as well for the upcoming EMMAs (which I’m judging again) and the MEF upcoming conference and Meffys Awards ceremony (I was a judge for that too for the third time I think). More on both of those as I get details.

Links ‘n stuff

It’s the usual story… too many tabs open in multiple browsers, a ton of stuff marked to read later, yada yada. So here’s a few links that I think are worth sharing with you.

Publishing and Media

As some of you may know, I do a lot of consulting work with media owners in the UK and the Nordic region. As such, I have a keen interest in all things publishing and this is a post about innovation in publishing with some very interesting links http://neilperkin.typepad.com/only_dead_fish/2011/04/shorter-and-sweeter.html

Of course, the big question is why all this innovation comes from outside the publishing world and not from within. Is it just too hard to innovate from within?

And some recent conference quotes:

“newspapers must invest in content, sales & disruption – sell or outsource everything else” #linktotherest #naamxc11 #jrc via @jxpaton

#cms2011 percentage of music that is digital: 80% percentage of digital newspapers: 2% opportunity or impending disaster?” A quote from the recent Guardian Changing Media Summit which I attended.

Apps, apps and more apps

The world has gone app crazy. Or at least, the mobile press would have you think so. There’s a disconnect between the reality (90 % of apps are deleted, it’s hard to make money from apps, app stores are still ropey etc.) and the press but it’s still a very interesting area and one that if you’re in mobile, you have to consider seriously. But let’s get one thing straight… creating an iPhone app is not a mobile strategy. And it’s not just me who is saying that. Anyway, on to some app links..

Distimo and MEF have teamed up to publish the European App Store Market Report. Unfortunately, you can only download the whole thing if you’re a member of MEF but there are some interesting snippets they have shared including weekends are top downloading times, folks don’t want to pay more than £2 for an app, in-app payments are going great guns and UK developers are doing very well. More here http://www.distimo.com/blog/2011_03_distimo-and-mef-publish-european-app-store-market-report/

The new report from WIP also shows the growing importance of in-app payments as sales revenues are decimated on the appearance of competitors offerings which are free. Well worth a look if apps are your business and if you want to know more about how to monetise them. http://www.wipconnector.com/blog/entry/april_app_store_report_momentum_shifting_to_in_app_payments

And if you think you could make a million with an app, then take a look at this infographic http://designtaxi.com/news/34297/Who-Wants-to-Be-an-App-Millionaire/ – the app sales world is skewed currently. There’s no money in the long tail (yet) from what I can tell.

And if you’re new to the world of apps and you have an Android phone, then this blogpost about favourite apps might be worth a look. http://www.chromewalker.com/cw_six/?p=2307

As for me, I play WordUp and Solitaire, I use Gmail, Google Maps (although it doesn’t always work), Gentle Alarm, Foursquare (although that doesn’t always work either as it can’t always register my location) and the browser for pretty much everything else – twitter, facebook, train time search in the main. I’m told that my focus on the browser as the route to do all the stuff I want to do is unusual and sophisticated. I’m not sure that’s the case so I’m interested to hear about your phone life too.

Music and digital

We’re fed a line by certain circles in the music industry that it’s being killed off by piracy and the proliferation of digital. I’ve always been sceptical about this. As far as I can see there is even more music around now than when I was a teenager and folks are still as passionate about it. And more interestingly, is that there seem to be even more potential revenue streams and business models for music. That’s got to be a good thing, right? Well, I’m sure there are folks who would vehemently disagree, but a new paper by Joel Waldfogel suggests that my hunch could be right. http://torrentfreak.com/report-despite-piracy-music-is-more-alive-than-ever-before-110325/

Mobile marketing and advertising

Think it’s too tough to plan and buy mobile media? Then you might want to take a look at this new white paper from Mobile Squared and StrikeAd. http://strikead.squarespace.com/white-paper/

Heard the buzzword ‘gamification’? Want to know what that might mean to mobile marketing? Then take a look at this article – worth a read http://www.marketingpilgrim.com/2011/03/the-gamification-of-mobile-marketing.html

Mobile Commerce

There are those who think mobile commerce is just a pipe dream. There are those, like Ryan Carson, who thought that people just wouldn’t want to use eBay on their mobiles (yes, I witnessed him say this at a Chinwag event). I knew he was wrong then. And he’s certainly wrong now. Hell, I expect he’s even using eBay on his mobile now. But if you’re in any doubt at all how important mobile is to ecommerce then please take note that PayPal’s *mobile* transactions exceed $6 million PER DAY. Don’t believe me? Then check out the article from their keynote at CTIA which also includes video clips from the keynote.

http://www.mobilecommercedaily.com/2011/03/22/paypal-mobile-transactions-exceed-6m-per-day-ctia-keynote

And when dotcom poster child, Groupon, is getting into mobile, you know this thing is serious http://mashable.com/2011/03/17/groupon-now/ [Let’s see if this will disrupt how we think about location based services.]

And take note, Tesco advises that 1 in 5 of their visits to Tesco.com come from their iPhone app. That’s huge. Quote from the recent Retail Week event via @martinnewman: “1 in 5 visits to Tesco.com coming through their iPhone app #rw20

I know I haven’t even got through half my links. More to come…
