I just spotted this picture on flickr advertising the fact that you can buy Coca-Cola using your mobile down in Singapore. I wonder how popular the service is and whether or not the network operators take a huge chunk of revenue.
Anyone know?
I am Helen Keegan, a veteran of mobile marketing, advertising and media since 2000. This is my diary and musings about mobile since 2004. I can't remember where I read it Helen - but it's apparently extremely, extremely popular.
ReplyDeleteI work for the mobile device management company - SmartTrust. We have worked with the operator who runs this (M1) for many years; in particular helping in the development of their mobile banking service. M1 has been exceptionally hot on mobile banking (run through SmartTrust's mobile VAS platform)and m-payment. Although we were not related to this application I know its a tie-up with Yeo Hiap Seng - a local drinks company / distributor. A quick Google on "M1 + SMS vending machine" should provide some answers.
ReplyDeleteI have personally noticed how many APAC and LatAm markets are much further down the m-payments road than western europe. I can't help but think that the red tape and regulations that we face in this country has set us back a few years. Look at Brazil, Singpore, Malaysia etc - we have worked with operators in these countries to develop m-banking & m-payment services for several years. Believe it or not - M1 launched its m-banking service in 2001......
Thanks Tim - that's really useful. Sounds like a bit of googling is in order re the vending machine.
ReplyDeleteAnd I agree with you re mobile payments. There's still a lot of red-tape in the UK as the digital payment regulations (as set out by the FSA - Financial Services Authority) were constructed before mobile was even on the agenda and it's taking us a long time to get beyond that.
Hi, Pepsi vending machines in Turkiye are also sell beverages on SMS
ReplyDeleteHi Ozgur
ReplyDeleteThanks for letting me know about vending machines in Turkey.
Out of interest, is the cost for a coca cola very much more expensive using SMS than using actual cash?
