Call for Interesting Mobile Apps, Services & Hardware in the North of England and beyond

Those of you who know me are aware that I take a keen interest in new apps, services and technologies. As part of that, I've been running demo sessions for 10 years or so - first at Mobile Monday London, and for the last 5 years, under my Heroes of Mobile banner in London and Barcelona. And they're always popular events.

These are not pitch events - they're much more relaxed. Think show 'n tell style with a bit of Q and A thrown in for good measure.

And I have one of these sessions coming up next week in Leeds - Innovation on the Fringe Goes North! - and I'd love to see you participate, especially if you're based North of Watford. Living in London, the local start-up scene is awash with new apps and services. But where are their Northern equivalents? I have a few up my sleeve, but I'd love to see many more. And I'm sure they're out there. I'm a Northerner by birth, I have friends up and down the British Isles and I know there's talent across the UK and not just centred in East London.

Are you doing something interesting in mobile apps, services, hardware or internet of things? It can be at concept, prototype or fully-fledged stage. Are you available in Leeds on Tuesday afternoon (3 Nov) for a couple of hours to share with us what you're doing and hang out with other entrepreneurs and fellow mobilists? If so, get in touch as soon as you can so that I can slot you into the schedule. Drop me an email or fill in this quick form to tell me a little bit about what you're doing and we'll take it from there.

And if you just fancy leaning back and seeing what's hot and what's not mobile-wise in Leeds, then please RSVP now.

And if you're not a Northerner, but you'd still like to take part with a demo, you're very welcome to!

The call for apps etc for the Heroes of the Mobile Fringe Festival in Barcelona in February 2016 will open later on in November.

Vodafone Mobile Clicks Competition now open to the UK with a prize fund of €150, 000

momolondon-largeVF_STK_RGBVodafone UK and Mobile Monday London today announce Vodafone Mobile Clicks 2009, a competition to inspire start-up businesses and individual developers to create and deliver a new mobile site or service – all creative ideas are welcome.

Mobile Clicks 2009 is run jointly with Vodafone Netherlands. If you wish to enter, please visit www.vodafonemobileclicks.com. The final will be held in Amsterdam in September and will feature three finalists from each country. The first three winners will be awarded a total sum of €150,000.

Last years’ Mobile Clicks’ winners included Nulaz, a location-based social networking service merging Google Maps and Facebook to allow people to see where their friends are, share locations and view local information, Tipspot a new online city guide service and Map the Gap, an idea-sharing application for mobile phones.

The competition consists of three selection rounds, running from April to September 2009. The panel of judges will include mobile internet experts from Vodafone as well as other industry leaders. The winner will be announced in Amsterdam in September this year.

The rules are pretty simple:

  • Participants must be or must have the intention to become a start-up enterprise/business in the field of mobile internet products or services. Start-up means that the enterprise/business cannot be older than three years since its inception.
  • Each participant may submit only one entry.
  • (Previous Dutch) Entries from Vodafone Mobile Clicks 2008 are allowed to participate again in Vodafone Mobile Clicks 2009
Registration for this contest is now open. Registration for the Netherlands will close at April 30th, 2009 and registration for the UK will close on May 14th, 2009.

We’ll have more details about the competition up on the Mobile Monday London website as and when they happen and we’ll have some Vodafone people on hand at our upcoming events too. In the meantime, head over to Vodafone Mobile Clicks 2009 and see how you can get your hands on some of that €150, 000 prize fund to kick start your business and get your service to market. The closing date for UK entries is 14th May 2009 so get your thinking caps on. Good luck!

OpenMIC Mobile Innovation Event in Bath on 2 April 09

openmic header

The lovely folks at DCKTN and OpenMIC have reminded me this morning about their upcoming event in Bath - It's a barcamp style unconference for discussion, debate and developing new mobile applications and mobile web services. And the lovely Dan Appelquist is one of the featured speakers, although anyone gets a chance to host or lead a session just by putting their name and idea forward. That's how a barcamp works for those of you who've never done one before.

openMIC Mobile Innovation Camp explores recent platform developments and aims to arm the attendee with the knowledge and skills to execute ideas for mobile apps (Symbian, iPhone, Android) and take them to market. The attendee will also learn how to create mobile web applications that utilise the new openness of the operator. In the afternoon attendees will join teams to develop application ideas into a tactical plan with possible investment to develop it further as an outcome.

Preparing for the event: openMIC attendees are encouraged to come to the event with an idea for a mobile application in mind. Ideas can be commercial or to instigate social or charitable purposes. Before the event attendees should suggest application and service ideas using the openMIC page at http://openmicamp.ning.com/ All ideas suggested are open and owned by the break out group that mobilizes to develop them.

Date: Thursday 2nd April 2009
Time: Welcome 9am, Drinks, Entertainment and Networking throughout the day
Venue: Bath Ventures Innovation Centre, Broad Quay, Bath, BA1 1UD
Cost: FREE

Who should attend: DIY developers, ideas people, operators, innovators -> anyone passionate and interested in open group development of new mobile apps for commercial or social use.

Sponsors: Silicon South West and Bath Ventures

For more info please email P[dot]Turgut[at]bath[dot]ac[dot]uk to register your interest and join the group over at http://openmicamp.ning.com/

Have you come up with something radical on mobile?

If so, you have just a a few days to get your entry in to Supernova.
Supernova in San Francisco and Techcrunch are looking for the next great mobile ideas...

"There are plenty of mobile devices and services, but the possibilities are even
greater. For
Mobile Connections at Supernova 2008, we're looking for game-changing innovations that provide a glimpse of the wireless future. This is not a startup contest -- it's a search for ideas. We're challenging anyone to make submissions... but, please, NO commercially-available products/services. We DO want to hear about innovative concepts, prototypes, research lab projects, hacks, and business ideas. If your submission blows us away, we'll invite you to showcase it at Supernova 2008. You'll also enjoy coverage on TechCrunch -- the leading media site covering emerging technologies and companies today; and the Supernova Conversation Hub. There will be no charge for those selected."
Seems like a good opportunity to me as the usual entry fee to the conference is $1695. The closing date is 23rd May 2008 and you can find out more on their website. Good luck!

What are you doing on 13th June?

If you're in London Town, you could do worse than head over to LSO St Lukes for the NMK Forum 07. Curated by Mike Butcher, it promises to be a day of discussion and debate around the new wave of innovation in the digital media industry. Leading industry figures (ahem, that includes me and pals Justin, Sam, Jemima and Alfie as well as luminaries such as Jason Calcanis of Weblogs fame and author and citizen media specialist Dan Gillmor) will talk about the future digital landscape online, offline and mobile (I'm on a panel entitled 'Communities, Commerce and Marketing' in the afternoon). There'll be a good turnout on the day if previous events are anything to go by so the knowledge and networking should be great, greatly enhanced by the unstuffy 'cabaret' layout thus enabling a proper conversation.

To book your, very reasonably priced ticket, go to http://www.nmk.co.uk/event/2007/06/13/NMK-Forum07. Tickets are £345 and there's a reduced rate for students, not for profit organisations, employees of micro-companies and freelancers of £245. Money well spent I reckon.

And if you can't wait that long to hear me in action, then you'll have to follow me to Denmark where I'm speaking at "Knock Knock The Future of Music" Conference in Aarhus from Innovation Lab on 31st May (It's being held in English not Danish). You can download the PDF flyer here. If you're interested in music and the impact of digital media and innovation in that sector, then it's probably worth a trip. Not least because there's also a music festival on that weekend as part of the conference and exhibition programme. A mini, Danish SXSW maybe?

If you're going to be there and fancy meeting up, let me know. I'll be at the networking dinner on the Thursday evening and am planning to hang around for the weekend too to check out some of the music, all being well.

Realeyes 3D win again

Realeyes 3D are doing some very cool things with mobile phones. By simply moving your phone, you can move around pictures and websites. You can check out how it works over at youtube. In fact, it's such a cool application, that not only did it win the Momo Global Peer Award at 3GSM in Barcelona this year, but they've also just landed a Red Herring 100 Europe award. This annual award is given to the top 100 private technology companies based in EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa). Well done Realeyes 3D and let's hope with this success, the software will be installed on more cameraphones hitting the market.
